England fast bowler Jofra Archer created new history in the ODI format for his team during the crucial Afghanistan vs England Group B match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where the right-arm fast bowler broke legendary English pacer James Anderson's record.

It is the must-win match for both England and Afghanistan to only stay in semi-final contention for this tournament. While Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is hosting the match, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi decided to bat first after winning the toss. Afghanistan lost three wickets in the powerplay and managed to score only 39 runs. Archer dominated in that powerplay as he picked up all three wickets.

Jofra Archer: Fastest England bowler to complete 50 ODI wickets

In the fifth over of the innings, Afghanistan lost their first wicket as the opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was bowled by Archer for only six runs. It was Archer's 50th ODI wicket, which the right-arm fast bowler completed in 30 ODIs. It set a new record for the England team as Archer recorded the fastest English bowler to complete 50 ODI wickets.

Legendary England right-arm pacer James Anderson was the previous record holder for the fastest England bowler to record 50 ODI wickets, as he completed it in 31 ODI matches.

Coming back to the Afghanistan vs England match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Archer later dismissed Sediqullah Atal (4) and Rahmat Shah (4) cheaply in the powerplay. However, the Afghan batters later strongly handled him, as Archer ended the game with the bowling figures of 10-0-64-3. He has recorded 52 wickets in 30 ODIs.

While the Afghan opener Ibrahim Zadran brought up the dominant batting performance with 177 runs from 146 balls, the new highest individual score in ICC Champions Trophy history, he got strong support from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (40), Azmatullah Omarzai (41), and Mohammad Nabi (40), as Afghanistan scored 325/7 in 50 overs.
