After a disappointing journey in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, English captain Jos Buttler has resigned from the leadership roles in the white-ball formats. Their last game of the Group B in the ongoing Champions Trophy, which will be played against South Africa on Saturday (March 1) at the National Stadium in Karachi, will be Buttler's last match as an England captain.
Till the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Jos Buttler has been leading the England team in the ODI and T20I formats. Meanwhile, from the England tour of India for the white-ball series, which was played just before the ongoing ICC tournament, the Test coach Brendon McCullum started his journey also as the white-ball coach of the team. However, his "Bazball" theory has completely hurt the English team, and it is facing severe backlash from the experts.

Jos Buttler was already under pressure since their semi-final exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. While Buttler led the English team to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the defending champions underperformed in the 2024 edition, which was hosted by the West Indies and the United Arab Emirates.
Just before the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Buttler's England lost both the T20I and ODI series against the hosts India by 4-1 and 3-0, respectively. Their overaggressive batting seemed to lack strategies. In the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which England have played only Pakistan as the Group B team, they lost against Australia and Afghanistan. While Australia successfully chased down the 350+ target, a record total in the tournament, and won by five wickets, Afghanistan beat the English side by eight runs to eliminate them before their last fixture in the competition's group stage.

The Group B match against South Africa will be the English skipper Buttler's last game, as he is resigning from the leadership role. The right-handed batter is also struggling with the bat, while many experts believe that he should bat at the top of the order in ODI cricket. The English team is currently in a big mess as the new English white-ball captain will have a very challenging task.
