Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson surpassed former Indian captain Virat Kohli in an ODI record book on Monday (February 10).

It was the second game of the ODI tri-series, where South Africa faced New Zealand at Lahore. After South Africa managed to score 304/6 in 50 overs, thanks to the ODI debutant opener Matthew Breetzke (150 off 148 balls; 11 fours and five sixes), who created history by becoming the first ODI debutant to score 150 runs, New Zealand chased down the target comfortably in 48.4 overs after losing four wickets.

Opener Devon Conway and Kane Williamson were the heroes for the Blackcaps. They had a 187-run partnership for the second wicket before Conway lost his wicket at an unlucky 97 runs off 107 balls (nine fours and one six). Williamson controlled the chase and had a 57-run partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket with Glenn Phillips (28 not out off 32 balls), as the former New Zealand skipper comfortably guided the Blackcaps to a solid victory.

Williamson scored 133 not out off 113 balls with the help of 13 fours and two sixes. It was Williamson’s first ODI century in more than five years. His previous ODI century (148) was against West Indies during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The latest ODI century was the right-handed batter’s 14th ODI hundred.

7000 ODI runs: Kane Williamson surpassed Virat Kohli

Williamson finished the game with a four, and the right-handed batter completed his 7000 ODI runs with that finishing. In his 167 ODI matches, Williamson scored 7001 ODI runs in 159 innings. The right-handed batter became the second-fastest batter to complete 7000 ODI runs. While Williamson just beat Virat Kohli (161 innings) in this achievement, only the former South African cricketer Hashim Amla has a faster 7000 ODI runs record than the New Zealander. Amla completed 7000 ODI runs in 150 ODI innings. In the meantime, Williamson became the fifth New Zealand cricketer to record 7000 ODI runs.
