For years, Sanju Samson has been the backbone of the Rajasthan Royals, showcasing consistent brilliance on the cricket field. Yet, despite his stellar performances, opportunities to represent India have been fleeting, hindering his chances of solidifying a spot in the national white-ball sides. Despite sporadic chances, Samson’s performances didn’t always dazzle, leaving him without a single ICC tournament appearance in his decade-long career.
However, the long wait finally ended when Samson’s name was announced in India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. This milestone moment marked a dream come true for the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter, albeit with a battle ahead to secure a spot in the playing XI, where he faces competition from Rishabh Pant.
While one might expect overwhelming emotions to accompany such a significant achievement, Samson remains grounded and focused. His demeanor reflects a deeper connection to his roots and a commitment to his home state, Kerala.
In a heartwarming display of support, a fan recently captured the essence of this bond by drawing Samson’s image on the roof of their house. The video of this gesture has since gone viral on social media, symbolizing the strength of the bond between Kerala and its cricketing hero, Sanju Samson.
Biju George, Samson’s early mentor and former India women’s cricket team’s fielding coach, shed light on Samson’s passion for Kerala cricket. In a recent conversation, George highlighted Samson’s concern for the success of Kerala’s cricket team in the upcoming domestic season.
“We spoke a few minutes after his selection to the T20 World Cup. But he was more interested in talking about the need for Kerala to win at least one trophy in the upcoming domestic season,” George added.
“He was saying that more children will take up cricket in the state if the team gets some success at the national level,” he told PTI.
