Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced on Friday (March 1) that their primary pre-season camp for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will commence in Kolkata from March 15, just a week before the tournament’s start.
The eagerly awaited IPL 2024 is set to begin on March 22, with reigning champions Chennai Super Kings facing off against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match in Chennai. Meanwhile, KKR will begin their campaign on March 23, meeting 2016 IPL winners Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground, Eden Gardens.
In a separate development, the Kolkata-based team revealed that some of its domestic players are currently participating in the ongoing DY Patil T20 Cup in Navi Mumbai. Consequently, KKR’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has established a temporary training base at the KKR Academy in Mumbai for this week.
As per a report by CricketNext, the players currently undergoing training under Nayar’s guidance include vice-captain Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Suyash Sharma, Anukul Roy, Vaibhav Arora, Chetan Sakariya, Sakib Hussain, and Ramandeep Singh.
KKR is determined to clinch their third IPL title this year, marking their first victory since 2014. Despite reaching the final in 2021, they faced setbacks, failing to advance beyond the league stage in both 2022 and 2023. With a formidable squad geared up for IPL 2024, they are optimistic about their prospects.
Shreyas Iyer is set to lead the team this season, aiming for a strong debut with the franchise after missing the entire last season due to a back injury. During his absence, Nitish Rana took charge. With the inclusion of key players such as Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Jason Roy, Rinku Singh, Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, among others, KKR emerges as one of the top contenders for the title this year.
