On Day 3 of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Optus Stadium, Perth, Virat Kohli made headlines with his elegance and concern. During India’s second innings, Kohli unleashed a rare upper cut off a Mitchell Starc delivery in the 111th over. The perfectly timed shot sailed over the boundary but took a dramatic turn as the ball bounced and struck a security guard seated near the boundary rope. Unaware of the incoming danger, the guard was momentarily stunned but recovered quickly after being attended to by the Australian physio and undergoing a concussion test.

The incident halted the game briefly, with Kohli and Nathan Lyon checking on the guard to ensure his well-being. While Kohli’s shot showcased his artistry, it also reflected his sportsmanship and empathy. Such a scintillating upper cut, not typically part of Kohli's repertoire, added flair to his innings and reminded fans of his adaptability at the crease.

Kohli joins the 2000-run elite in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Beyond the theatrics of the six, Kohli reached a monumental milestone, becoming the fifth Indian batter to score 2000 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Achieving this feat in just 44 innings, he joined the illustrious company of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, and Cheteshwar Pujara. Kohli's tally includes eight centuries and five half-centuries, underscoring his dominance in the marquee series against Australia.

Although Kohli had a rare failure in the first innings, scoring just five runs off Josh Hazlewood, he made up for it in the second innings with precise footwork and patience. His contributions carried the momentum forward after the record-breaking partnership between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, ensuring India remained in command.
