Lanka Premier League 2022 to run from December 6 to 23

The third edition of the Lanka Premier League, which was postponed, will take place from December 6 to 23, roughly the same period as last year, according to official confirmation from Sri Lanka Cricket. Samantha Dodanwela, who is in charge of organising the LPL tournament, announced the start date in August. However, the duration of the tournament as well as the date of the final are now set in stone.

Five teams will compete in the tournament once more, with franchises named after the cities of Dambulla, Colombo, Jaffna, Kandy, and Galle. The LPL will be played at three different locations:

Sooriyawewa (Hambantota), Pallekele, and Khettarama (Colombo) will host the final match.

Additionally, the format is the same as the second edition.In the round-robin phase, each team will play twice against each other before four of the five teams advance to the qualifiers, which are similar to the IPL’s final sequence. Before teams three and four play an eliminator, there will be a direct qualifier for the final between the teams that finish first and second. The second finalist will then be chosen by a second eliminator.

Since there was a lot of ownership change between the first and second seasons, the tournament was not particularly stable. However, the LPL has faced an additional obstacle this year in navigating Sri Lanka’s crippling economic crisis, which the league organisers claim was the primary reason for the tournament’s August postponement.

The fixtures have been announced by Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG group, the official organisers, but little is known about who will own the five franchises this season. The names of the franchises have also not been revealed. Ownership turnover is expected to increase.

Jaffna’s Kings, previously known as the Stallions under the previous season’s owners, have won both editions thus far.
