Match 3 of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup was a low-scoring thriller as Namibia beat Oman in the Super Over at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. David Wiese starred with his all-round heroics in the one-over eliminator as Namibia eventually prevailed. This marked the fourth tied clash in T20 WC history. Here is the list of Super Overs in the competition.

1. New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2012

The 2012 group-stage game between hosts Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Pallekele witnessed the first-ever Super Over in T20 WC history. Both teams scored 174 runs, leading to a thrilling tie. In the final two overs of regular play, New Zealand needed 20 runs to win. Ross Taylor and Jacob Oram put up a valiant effort, but Sri Lankan bowlers held their nerve, with Lasith Malinga delivering a brilliant penultimate over, conceding just 7 runs.

Sri Lanka batted first in the Super Over, scoring 13/1. Tim Southee bowled excellently, not conceding a single boundary. Mahela Jayawardene managed to hit a couple of crucial twos, but tight bowling from Southee restricted them. In response, New Zealand struggled against Malinga’s precision. Despite having the hard-hitting Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill, the Kiwis could only manage 7/1, handing Sri Lanka the victory.

2. New Zealand vs West Indies, 2012

Days after their clash with Sri Lanka, New Zealand were involved in another tied encounter, this time against the West Indies in Pallekele. Chasing 140, New Zealand needed 20 runs off the final two overs. Ross Taylor and Doug Bracewell brought the equation down to 14 from the last over. Sunil Narine bowled the final over and despite a six from Bracewell, the match ended in a tie with the Kiwis at 139/7.

In the Super Over, New Zealand batted first and scored 17/0 as Ross Taylor smashed Marlon Samuels for a boundary and a six. Tim Southee was tasked with defending this total. Chris Gayle started the over with a towering six, putting pressure on the Kiwis. Samuels, batting alongside Gayle, hit another six off the third ball. West Indies managed to chase down the target in just five balls, securing a dramatic win.

3. Namibia vs Oman, 2024

The Namibia-Oman duel in 2024 was a low-scoring thriller, as both teams scored 109 runs each. In the last two overs of regular play, Namibia needed 16 runs to win with three wickets in hand. Aamer Jamal bowled the penultimate over, conceding just 5 runs and taking a crucial wicket. The final over, bowled by Bilal Khan, was a rollercoaster as Ruben Trumpelmann managed to tie the scores with a boundary off the last ball.

In the Super Over, Namibia batted first and scored 21/0, with David Wiese smashing a four and a six against Zeeshan Maqsood. Skipper Gerhard Erasmus also contributed with two boundaries. Oman, in response, struggled against Wiese’s tight bowling. He conceded just 10 runs and dismissed Naseem Khushi, securing a memorable victory for Namibia.

4. India vs Pakistan 2007

The first tied game in T20 WC history was played between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in the inaugural edition in 2007. Both teams scored 141 in a low-scoring thriller in Durban. In the last two overs, Pakistan needed 17 runs with four wickets in hand. Sreesanth bowled the penultimate over, giving away 8 runs and taking a wicket. With 9 required off the final over, bowled by Joginder Sharma, Pakistan managed to tie the game, with Misbah-ul-Haq’s run-out on the last ball being the decisive moment.

As Super Overs were not yet introduced, the match’s outcome was determined through a bowl-out. Each team selected five bowlers to hit the stumps in an epic showdown. India, led by MS Dhoni in his first international as captain, emerged victorious by hitting the stumps three times, while Pakistan missed all their attempts. This bowl-out is remembered as a historic moment in T20 WC history.

These instances highlight the intense drama and excitement that Super Overs bring to the T20 World Cup, making for unforgettable moments in cricket history.
