Melbourne Renegades Women created history in the Women’s Big Bash League 2024/25 (WBBL 2024/25) encounter against the hosts Adelaide Strikers Women by successfully chasing the highest target in the competition history.
After Renegades captain Hayley Matthews chose to field first at Adelaide, Strikers scored 185/8 in 20 overs. Opener Smriti Mandhana (40 off 25 balls) and captain Tahila McGrath (49 off 24 balls) had important roles in the innings along with Orla Prendergast’s late cameo (24 off 12 balls).
While five out of seven Renegades bowlers took wickets, captain Hayley Matthews (2/24) was the only bowler to claim more than one wicket.

Renegades recorded the highest successful chase in WBBL history
In reply, captain Hayley Matthews and Courtney Webb set a 90-run opening partnership before Webb retired hurt for 37 runs. Although Alice Capsey (4) was dismissed cheaply, Mathews and Deandra Dottin’s unbroken 85-run partnership helped Renegades to win the match by nine wickets as they chased the big target in 17.1 overs.
Player of the Match Mathews completed her 50 runs in 38 balls. She scored 85 not out off 54 balls, while Dottin scored 46 not out off only 18 balls.
It was the highest successful chase in the Women’s Big Bash League history. The previous record was successfully chasing 184-run targets twice.
