The Mumbai Indians announced on Friday that Mark Boucher, a former South African wicketkeeper-batsman, will take over as their head coach for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced earlier this week that Boucher would leave his position as the men’s senior team’s head coach following the 2017 T20 World Cup, which will take place in Australia in October-November.

As a wicketkeeper, batsman, and holder of the record for the most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper, Mark Boucher has had a long and illustrious career.

Boucher has previously worked in the IPL, most notably in 2016 when he was the Knight Riders’ wicket keeping coach. However, he has little prior T20 franchise coaching expertise. Both the Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers were his former teams. After that, he became the head coach of the Titans in the domestic South African league before becoming the men’s national team coach of South Africa in 2019 and during his tenure, his team won 11 tests, 12 ODIs, and 23 T20 matches.

Mahela Jayawardene, a former head coach of the Mumbai Indians, was chosen earlier this week to serve as the organisation’s Global Head of Performance.
