Chennai Super Kings’ former captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has been predominantly batting in the final two overs for the franchise in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. However, a recent decision to hold himself back in a crucial moment surprised fans and cricket experts alike.
In a match against Punjab Kings, when CSK lost their sixth wicket in the 16th over, fans anticipated Dhoni’s arrival at the crease. Instead, Shardul Thakur was sent out to bat ahead of Dhoni, prompting speculation about the team’s strategy. Former cricketers, including Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh, expressed concerns over Dhoni’s lower-order batting position, suggesting that it may not be beneficial for CSK.
A report in the Times of India shed light on the underlying reason behind Dhoni’s batting position. CSK officials disclosed that the 42-year-old veteran is playing with a muscle tear in his leg, which restricts his ability to run for extended periods. The injury, sustained early in the IPL 2024 season, has compelled Dhoni to bat lower down the order, as running between the wickets poses a challenge for him.
Despite the discomfort caused by the muscle tear, CSK management has opted to allow Dhoni to continue playing in the tournament, especially with Devon Conway sidelined due to injury. Dhoni is undergoing treatment and taking medications to manage the pain, but has been advised to minimize running between the wickets.

This isn’t the first time Dhoni has battled through injury in the IPL. In the previous season, he underwent knee surgery during the off-season after suffering an injury. While he has fully recovered from the knee issue, the muscle tear presents a new challenge, affecting his mobility on the field and contributing to his altered batting position in the CSK lineup.
