MS Dhoni is known for his calm nature and is often called ‘Captain Cool’ in cricket. But even he has lost his cool at times, and he doesn’t hesitate to admit it. At a Mastercard India event with Mandira Bedi, MS Dhoni talked about one of the most controversial moments of his career. When Bedi asked if he had ever lost his cool, Dhoni said, "Many times," and recalled the 2019 IPL incident when he stepped onto the field to question the umpires.
"Yes, many times. In one of the IPL matches, I walked onto the field that was a big mistake," Dhoni said. "There have been other times too when emotions took over because cricket is a high-pressure game. You're expected to win every match and handle pressure in many things at once. That's why I always say, if you're angry or frustrated, it's better to stay quiet, step away for a while, and take deep breaths. It's just like dealing with pressure if you stop thinking too much about the result, it helps. Your emotions should never control your decisions," he added.
During a match between CSK and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur, Dhoni got angry over an umpire’s decision and stepped onto the field to question them. The incident happened in the final over when CSK needed eight runs from the last three balls. Ben Stokes bowled a full-toss to Mitchell Santner, who had just come in after Dhoni got out.
Question: Have you ever lost your cool? [Mastercard India]
MS Dhoni said "Yes, lots of times - One of the IPL games, I just walked out to the field -- That was the big mistake".
Santner ran two runs from the ball, which was first called a no-ball by umpire Ulhas Gandhe, who thought it was above the batter’s waist. But square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford, who had a better view, disagreed and asked Gandhi to take back his decision. This meant CSK now needed six runs from two balls.

The sudden change left Santner and Ravindra Jadeja confused, and they questioned the umpires, but Oxenford stuck to his call. Things got even more heated when a furious Dhoni, who was already out and had no reason to be on the field, walked onto the pitch to argue. He pointed at Gandhe and told Oxenford that the no-ball had already been given. The situation became tense as players from both teams gathered around the umpires, who refused to change their decision. Interestingly, TV replays later suggested that Gandhe’s original call might have been right.
With CSK needing six runs from two balls, Stokes gave away two runs on the next ball and then bowled a wide. On the final delivery, Santner hit a six, leading CSK to a four-wicket win. Dhoni, who scored 58 off 43 balls in the match, was fined 50% of his match fee for breaking the IPL's Code of Conduct. He was charged with a Level 2 offence under Article 2.20.
