The eagerly anticipated IPL 2024 mini-auction unfolded at Dubai’s Cola Arena on December 19, where all ten teams, including Mumbai Indians led by newly appointed captain Hardik Pandya, aimed to strengthen their squads. Mumbai Indians, armed with a budget of INR 17.75 CR and eight squad vacancies, prioritized the acquisition of fast bowlers, evident from their strategic approach.

Their initial purchase featured a bidding battle with Lucknow Super Giants, securing South African Gerald Coetzee for five crores. The squad’s second addition was Sri Lankan left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madhushanka. Shreyas Gopal, a Karnataka leg-spin bowler, became their third buy at a modest price of 20 lakh, addressing the need for a backup leg-spin option alongside Piyush Chawla.

The day’s seventh purchase was Mohammad Nabi, the Afghan all-rounder, secured at his base price of 1.5 crore.

Reflecting on Mumbai Indians’ previous season, they finished fourth with eight wins and six losses in 14 league games, ultimately losing to Gujarat Titans in the second qualifier.
