Pakistan has had a difficult 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign; their prospects of making the semi-finals are now in jeopardy after two straight defeats. Pakistan, will need to hope for additional favourable outcomes in addition to winning their remaining group-stage match comfortably.
In Group A, Pakistan has not been able to win even a single match so far, with defeats at the hands of New Zealand and India. They were initially defeated by 60 runs against New Zealand in the first match, though Babar Azam and Khushdil Shah fought hard to make a comeback. The second match was a six-wicket defeat against India, where Virat Kohli's undefeated century overshadowed their score of 241 runs.
New Zealand vs. Bangladesh (February 24, 2025): If Bangladesh win, Pakistan's semi-final hopes would remain alive because it would block New Zealand's path to four points.
Pakistan vs. Bangladesh (February 27, 2025): Pakistan need to win this encounter convincingly so that they gain a better Net Run Rate (NRR) that could turn out to be decisive in the event of a tie.
For Pakistan to move to the semi-finals, the following need to happen.
1. Bangladesh Beats New Zealand: This outcome would put New Zealand on two points from three games, still in contention.
2. Pakistan Registers a Comfortable Win Over Bangladesh: A big win would bring Pakistan's points to two and, more crucially, boost their NRR higher than that of New Zealand and Bangladesh.
3. India Beats New Zealand: An Indian win would keep New Zealand on two points, ruling them out.
In this case, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh would both have two points, so NRR would be the determining factor for qualifying to the semi-finals. Hence, Pakistan's priority must be to win big against Bangladesh in order to increase their NRR sufficiently.
