The theft of eight CCTV cameras installed at the Gaddafi Stadium for the Lahore leg of the Pakistan Super League continues to pose a threat to the competition. The financial crisis in Pakistan is already affecting the tournament.

In addition to the eight security cameras, generator batteries and fibre cables for CCTV cameras were stolen from the stadium, according to ARY News in Pakistan. The stolen equipment also cost “millions of rupees,” as per the report.

The security measures implemented at the venues are said to have cost the authorities a PKR 500 million. The Punjab government, on the other hand, has agreed to pay PKR 250 million and requests that the Pakistan Cricket Board cover the remaining 50% of the costs.

The PCB, on the other hand, has not consented to this demand to pay the money, claiming that it is the provincial government’s responsibility to ensure the venues’ security. If the conflict between the two parties continues, the matches will be moved to Karachi.

Ramiz Raja, the former chairman of the PCB, is unhappy with this decision and has advised the board not to relocate the matches because doing so could result in significant financial losses. He also emphasized that a major tournament cannot proceed if the organizing venues do not have adequate security measures in place.

“PSL 8 not played in Lahore/Rawalpindi will be a big loss. It was based on home and away concept. PSL played in only one city will kill the excitement of the tournament among fans”

Ramiz said, while speaking to Geo News.

Sunday’s PSL 8 matchup between Peshawar Zalmi and Lahore Qalandars took place at Gaddafi Stadium. Only Karachi and Multan had hosted PSL games this season up until Saturday.

Before hosting the entire playoff action, including the final on March 19, Lahore is scheduled to host four more league games.

Considering that the Sri Lankan cricket team was killed in a terrorist attack in Lahore in 2009 while they were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium from their hotel, it is important to note that the security for cricket games has always been increased. Six Sri Lankan players were injured in that attack, as were six security guards and two civilians.
