In a thrilling encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Monday, April 22, Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a resounding 9 wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 38 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This victory was fueled by an outstanding performance from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a blistering 104 runs off just 60 balls, and Sandeep Sharma, who wreaked havoc with a remarkable five-wicket haul.
The Royals commenced their chase of 180 runs with immense determination, as Jaiswal and Jos Buttler showcased an aggressive batting approach, smashing boundaries and sixes at will. By the end of the powerplay, they had amassed a formidable total of 60 runs without losing any wickets. However, rain momentarily halted their momentum, which interrupted play immediately after the powerplay.

Following the resumption of the game, Mumbai Indians managed to break through as Piyush Chawla dismissed Jos Buttler in the 8th over after he had contributed 35 runs off 25 deliveries. Nonetheless, skipper Sanju Samson teamed up with Jaiswal to forge a formidable partnership, adding 109 runs off just 65 balls to the scoreboard. Jaiswal eventually reached the milestone of his second IPL century off 59 balls in the penultimate over of the game.
As the match approached its climax, with just four runs required off 11 balls, the Royals sealed a nine-wicket victory with eight balls to spare.
Earlier in the game, Sandeep Sharma delivered a phenomenal bowling performance, claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul for the Royals. His exceptional spell restricted Mumbai Indians to 179/9 despite Tilak Varma’s valiant half-century.
Opting to bat first on a spin-friendly pitch, Mumbai’s innings got off to a shaky start as Rajasthan bowler Trent Boult struck early in the first over, dismissing Rohit Sharma for just six runs. Sandeep Sharma compounded Mumbai’s woes by dismissing both openers within nine balls. His precise bowling accounted for the dismissals of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, leaving Mumbai reeling at ten runs for the loss of two wickets.
Mumbai Indians struggled to build partnerships during their innings, managing to post only 45/3 in the powerplay, mainly due to Mohammad Nabi’s contribution of 18 runs. Rajasthan Royals further capitalized on their bowling prowess as Yuzvendra Chahal achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first bowler in IPL history to claim 200 wickets. Chahal’s landmark wicket came from Mohammad Nabi, who fell victim to his deceptive bowling.
Despite a resilient partnership between Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, Mumbai Indians failed to accelerate their scoring rate. Varma’s valiant half-century and Wadhera’s steady innings were not enough to propel Mumbai to a competitive total, as they eventually scored 179/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is the first player to score two centuries in IPL before turning 23.
