Ravichandran Ashwin was the bowler who bought Mankad to the IPL, and now he is the first player to Retire Out. What is Retiring Out though? When a person Retires his innings with the permission of the opposing captain and umpires, it is termed as retiring not out, and this occurs due to an injury. When a batter walks out without informing anyone in the opposition camp or the umpire the move is considered as retiring out, and that effectively ends the innings.

Against LSG, Ravichandran Ashwin came out in the 10th over to steer the innings after a small collapse. He held one end up and took the team into the death overs. Knowing that he may not be able to clear the boundary as effectively as batters like Riyan Parag who were in the shed, Ravichandran Ashwin voluntarily walked out.

It is not clear as to who initiated the move, but Ravichandran Ashwin’s manner of dismissal may be one that could be repeated in the future. In the past, many batters are known to struggle in their innings. They find themselves in situations where they cannot score runs but also cannot get out. They get stuck, face a lot of dot balls, and build pressure. With Ashwin leading the way in retiring out, many other batters may find themselves doing the same when they are facing a bad day in the field.

While this is the first time such a dismissal has occurred in the IPL, batters have been retiring out in other smaller tournaments. Retiring out is also a common mode of dismissal in warm-up games when batters decide to allow others to get some time in the middle after they faced a decent amount of deliveries.

Ravichandran Ashwin was in the middle of a solid 68 run partnership when the decision was taken. With a couple overs to go, Rajasthan Royals decided to take a punt and allow Riyan Parag to have a swing in the middle. The move may not have paid off as Riyan Parag hit one six on his way to eight, but with Rajasthan doing it once, it could be a move that is repeated by many other sides in the future.

With bowling sides already using tactical substitutions to get their best fielders in after the bowlers have bowled out, batters look like they are in with their own thoughts as well. If teams use this moment and bring in more tactical retirements, Cricket analysts around the World are going to have a lot more fun as they will not be able to predict scores with as much ease as they once did.
