The opening day of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Sydney Test, has experienced one unusual incident on the ground as the Australian opener Usman Khawaja was the only player to wear a black armband. The reason for it has been revealed later.

Former South African international cricketer Ashwell Prince lost his wife, Melissa Prince, at the age of 40 years after a cancer battle. In respect of the tragedy, Khawaja wore a black armband.

Khawaja and Prince were teammates in the English County cricket

Khawaja and Prince played together for the English county side Lancashire in the 2014 season, when Lancashire returned to Division 1. Both had some great time with the bat in that County season.

Usman Khawaja was out on the last ball of the day

Coming back to the Sydney Test, India were all out for 185 runs in the first innings after choosing to bat first. While the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to drop himself in the playing XI, Jasprit Bumrah is taking the leadership role as a stand-in captain. Despite the overcast conditions, Bumrah chose to bat first to avoid the fourth innings batting challenge. Only the Indian wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant managed to reach the 30-run mark in the innings as the left-handed batter scored 40 off 98 balls.

In the tricky last 15 minutes of the day, Australian openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja had to survive, but Khawaja lost his wicket on the final ball of the day as he fell in Japsrit Bumrah's delivery while his outside edge found the slip fielder KL Rahul. The opener was dismissed for only two runs as Australia ended the day at 9/1.

The 38-year-old Aussie opener Khawaja is struggling in the ongoing Test series as the left-handed opening batter has scored 143 runs in nine innings with an average of 17.87. Apart from one half-century in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, Khawaja hasn't reached the 25-run mark again.
