Ricky Ponting, the former head coach of Delhi Capitals, has expressed his continued interest in coaching within the Indian Premier League (IPL) following his departure from the franchise. Ponting, who served as head coach for seven years, left the team after they failed to secure an IPL title during his tenure. In a recent interview on The ICC Review podcast, Ponting reflected on his time with Delhi Capitals, acknowledging that the team's inability to clinch the championship was a significant factor in his exit.
"I'd love to coach again in the IPL"
Ponting also hinted that the franchise might be leaning towards hiring an Indian-based coach for the upcoming seasons, which could have influenced the decision to part ways. "I'd love to coach again in the IPL," Ponting stated. "I've had a great time every year that I've been involved, whether as a player in the early days or as head coach at Mumbai before joining Delhi."
"What you'll find is that they'll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. They made it pretty clear that they wanted to head in a different direction with someone that could give them a bit more time and availability through the off-season," he explained.
Future prospects in IPL coaching
Despite his departure from Delhi Capitals, Ponting expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the team and the experiences he gained over the years. While he remains enthusiastic about exploring future coaching opportunities in the IPL, Ponting made it clear that he is not interested in pursuing international coaching roles at this time. Specifically, he ruled out any potential involvement with the vacant head coach position for the England cricket team, which became available following Matthew Mott's exit.
"I'm really thankful for my time there, met some great people, worked with some great players through the years. There could be a few opportunities for me popping up in the next couple of months, and I'd love to be back coaching in the IPL again next season."
While coaching opportunities in the IPL remain on his radar, Ponting has ruled out any interest in taking on international coaching roles, including the vacant head coach position for England after Matthew Mott's exit. "No, I wouldn't ever consider doing that," Ponting affirmed.
