Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been handed a one-match suspension and also fined a hefty amount of INR 30 Lakh for his team’s slow over-rate in the game against Rajasthan Royals on May 7. Notably, Axar Patel will lead the team in the game in Pant’s absence. However, Delhi Capitals were 10 minutes behind time at the start of the final over in that game as well.

However, the suspension and the hefty fine came as this was their third such offence in the IPL 2024. As per the IPL playing rules, the first over-rate offence attracts a fine of ₹12 lakh for the captain whereas the second one’s punishment is a fine of ₹24 lakh as well. And, when it comes to the third over-rate offence, this can see a suspension for one match and a fine of ₹30 lakh for the captain as well.

DC faced a mixed season in IPL 2024

The rest of the Delhi players – including the impact substitute – have been fined INR 12 Lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is lesser as well. Meanwhile, DC filed an appeal challenging this ruling of the match referee which was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review as well.

However, the Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and shared that the decision of the match referee is final and binding. And, Rishabh Pant will now miss the all-important match on Sunday (May 12) evening against the in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bangalore where they still have a hope to make playoffs.

“Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals has been fined has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” said BCCI.

“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 30 Lac and suspended for one match. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 Lac or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the statement added.

“As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Match Referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the Match Referee remains final and binding,” BCCI added.
