India captain Rohit Sharma is likely to miss the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Trophy against Australia. The star Indian skipper, reportedly, informed to the chief selector and top official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he would not feature in the Test match, starting November 22 at the Perth Stadium as well.
However, Rohit Sharma also said that he is dealing with a personal matter, and he might opt out of the Perth Test if it continues as well. Meanwhile, the Indian board is yet to receive any official confirmation from him as well.
However, Rohit Sharma is currently on a break as India are playing the T20I series against Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh team. Earlier, he led India to a 2-0 series win over the same opponents as well. And, Rohit Sharma is expected to play an important role in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy as India are looking to win their third Test series in Australia on a trot after 2018-19 and 2020-21 as well.
However, the Perth Test will be followed by the Day-Night Test at the Adelaide Oval from December 6 as well. Meanwhile, the Gabba Test will start on December 14, after the Boxing Day Test will be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 as well. Notably, SCG will host the fifth and final Test from January 3 next year.
Rohit Sharma has so far played seven Tests in Australia, where he has scored 408 runs which came at an average of 31.38 with three fifties and a top score of unbeaten 63 to show for his efforts.
On the other hand, India are also looking to reach their third final of the World Test Championship after losing to New Zealand and Australia in 2021 and 2023 final as well. Notably, they are currently placed on top of the points table in the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship, having secured 98 points due to wins in eight out of 11 Tests so far as well.
