While India had a completely bad day during the second day of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, it became worse with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s knee injury.

India are busy in the three-match home Test series against New Zealand. Bengaluru is hosting the first Test of the series. After the opening day was completely washed out in rain, Indian captain Rohit Sharma chose to bat first after winning the toss.

It was completely destructive for the hosts as India were bundled out for only 46 runs, their lowest Test innings total at home. During that horrible first innings, only the opener Yashsavi Jaiswal (13) and the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant (20) managed to reach the double-digit figures.

Dhruv Jurel replaced Pant as a substitute

In reply, the visitors New Zealand comfortably took the lead. At the end of the 37th over of New Zealand’s first innings, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant got an injury, which created a massively tense situation in the Indian camp. He got an injury on his right knee, where he had surgery after his car accident.

After getting medical attention, he left the field, and Dhruv Jurel kept the wicket as a substitute.

We don't want to take a risk: Rohit Sharma

At the end of the day, Indian captain Rohit Sharma clarified about Pant’s injury. Skipper revealed that Pant’s right knee had swelling, and the team didn’t want to take any risk on Pant. The captain is also hopeful for Pant’s return to the third day of the Test match.

Rohit said after the match, "Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his knee cap, the same leg on which he has got a surgery done. So he has got a bit of swelling on it. And you know the muscles are quite tender at this point in time, so it's a precautionary measure. We don't want to take a risk. Rishabh doesn't want to take a risk because he has gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg. That was the reason for him to go inside. Hopefully, at night he can recover and we will see him back on the field tomorrow."

In late November, India will tour Australia for a crucial five-match Test series, which will also be a part of the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship. Pant will be an important factor for this forthcoming tour.

Coming back to the Bengaluru Test, New Zealand ended the second day at 180/3 with a lead of 134 runs.
