Rohit Sharma's Future as Test Captain Under Scrutiny

Under Rohit’s leadership, India lost the Asia Cup 2022, T20 World Cup 2022, and WTC final 2023. Rohit’s age is also against him, as he will be 38 when the next WTC final takes place.

In a surprising turn of events, speculation is growing about the potential replacement of Rohit Sharma as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. While Rohit has excelled as an accomplished limited-overs captain, his record and performance in Test cricket have raised questions regarding his suitability for the leadership role. As discussions gain momentum, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces a crucial decision that could shape the future of Indian Test cricket.

Rohit’s performance as a Test captain has been inconsistent, leading to concerns about his ability to command the team effectively in the longest format of the game. While he has shown glimpses of brilliance, including a series win against England, there have been instances where tactical decisions and batting form have come under scrutiny. The demanding nature of Test cricket necessitates a captain who can make astute decisions and provide stability to the team.

In the absence of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, India selected KS Bharat to serve as the primary wicketkeeper in the WTC final. However, due to his poor performance with the bat in both innings of the WTC final, Bharat was unable to seize the opportunity.

During the West Indies series, India may use a different wicketkeeper. Ishan Kishan is one option if the selectors decide to remove Rohit Sharma as captain of the Test team.

They could also remove him from the team. If that occurs, India will require a brand-new opener. Some of the players who might get the chance to play their first Test against the West Indies include Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Indian selectors may drop some of the senior players from the Test squad including the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli is also growing old but he is not as inconsistent as some of his other teammates. Rahane performed well in the first innings of the WTC final 2023 but selectors might start looking past him.
