David Warner, the opening batsman for the Australian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup, has acknowledged that the committee has a difficult decision to make. Australia hasn’t decided on a batting order yet because players keep fighting for spots. As the 26-year-old continues to impress, Tim David’s inclusion in the national team just prior to the tournament has provided them with a valuable middle order option.

David struck 42 off just 20 deliveries in the second Twenty20 International against West Indies on Friday, October 7, clearing the ropes three times. In his first tour with Australia, he had also scored a rapid fifty against India.The selectors are considering selecting a team without the experienced batsman, despite the fact that he played a role in their successful T20 World Cup campaign last year in the UAE. His performances have put pressure on former captain Steven Smith.

“Each individual has their roles – we’ve got Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell who are our finishers – (so) where does he fit in the line-up and what’s his role? Coming out and playing that role there when it was a hard wicket to start on really opens our eyes to ‘how do we utilise that?’ But even what he did for Mumbai (Indians, in the IPL), he got a couple of thirties or forties off eight or nine balls – it’s incredible. You don’t get these types of players every day. It’s going to be good for us moving forward and hopefully there’s a spot there as well, because the selectors have got a headache now.”

Warner said after the second T20I.

Even though Australia had just lost two crucial wickets at that point in the innings, Warner was particularly pleased with David’s brave approach.

“Now he’s in our team and our set-up, it’s a godsend. He’s an incredible player and he’s got some serious power. It boosts our middle order. With his height as well, and strength, it suits us that’s for sure. You saw it there – when we lost ourselves and there’s two new batters in, ‘Maxi’ (Glenn Maxwell) got run out, and he came out to play like that – that’s fearless cricket. That’s what we like about our brand at the moment. Everyone owns their own space, but when you execute your skill and what you practise, that’s what we want.” 

Warner noted.

After Marcus Stoinis was sidelined with an injury, Australia will now have three Twenty20 Internationals against England before the World Cup to finalise their lineup. The first Twenty20 International is scheduled for Sunday in Perth.
