Bangladesh’s star cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan, widely recognized as an all-rounder, is currently facing a significant setback in his career. Known for his left-arm spin and consistent batting performances, Shakib's bowling action has been deemed illegal according to ICC regulations. This has resulted in his suspension from bowling, which has put his future as an all-rounder under serious scrutiny.

Shakib recently underwent a reassessment of his bowling action at the Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Science in Chennai on December 21. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on January 11 that he would continue his suspension due to his action still not meeting ICC standards. This is a major blow for the 37-year-old cricketer, who has been a key figure in the Bangladesh cricket team.

This is the first time Shakib has faced a ban on his bowling after a long career since his debut in 2006. The first instance occurred in September 2024 during a county cricket match in England, where he was representing his club Surrey against Somerset. His action was found to be invalid during testing at Loughborough University, where the ECB clarified the suspension under ICC guidelines.

Shakib is now racing against time to clear his bowling action ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament, scheduled to begin on February 19, will be held in Pakistan and Dubai under a hybrid model. With the event being a major milestone for international cricket, Shakib is eager to contribute as an all-rounder. However, his suspension from bowling puts his spot in the Bangladesh ODI team at risk, especially since the team has younger and more versatile players who could replace him.

Shakib, who has retired from Test and T20I formats, is now solely focused on ODIs. With over 14,000 international runs and more than 700 wickets in his illustrious career, his value as an all-rounder is undeniable. However, if he is unable to bowl, his position as a batsman-only player may not be enough to secure his place in the squad.

Shakib’s last competitive match was on November 30 in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Since then, he has been under scrutiny, trying to resolve the issues with his bowling action. His current suspension limits his ability to contribute fully to the team, raising questions about his role in the upcoming Champions Trophy. For Shakib,This tournament could potentially be the last major ICC event of his career.
