One of India's finest bowlers of this generation, Mohammed Shami, has consistently delivered for his country across all formats. Over the years, his performances have elevated his status to an indispensable asset, particularly in the Test and ODI formats. Despite his stellar record, eyebrows were raised when Shami wasn't part of India's playing XI for the initial matches in the ODI World Cup last year. However, as fate would have it, Shami made a strong return following Hardik Pandya's injury, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Shami's hilarious take on World Cup snub
At the recent CEAT Cricket Awards, Shami was asked about his World Cup experience, specifically regarding his exclusion from the playing XI in the tournament's early stages. Shami responded in his trademark witty fashion, saying that after finally getting the chance, he bowled so well that neither captain Rohit Sharma nor head coach Rahul Dravid dared to think of dropping him again.
His cheeky comment sparked a burst of laughter from the audience and brought infectious smiles to both Rohit and Dravid, who couldn’t contain their laughter either. The lighthearted exchange between the three highlighted the camaraderie within the team.
"I'm habitual to it, I think," Shami said when asked about his brilliant comebacks to the team after being sidelined initially.
"In 2015, 2019, and 2023, I had the same start. When I was given a chance, the performances, thanks to god, they never thought of dropping me again. You can call to hard work, but I'm always ready for a chance. Only when you're ready can you prove yourself. Otherwise, I can only run to the field to give water! It's better to seize the opportunity when you get it," he further said.

Shami's stellar comeback and injury setback
When Shami was eventually included in the team, he made an immediate impact, wreaking havoc with the ball. He finished as the tournament's top wicket-taker, proving his immense value to the side. His exceptional form solidified his place in the team, with Rohit and Dravid not needing any more convincing of his abilities.

Unfortunately, Shami hasn't featured for India since the conclusion of the ODI World Cup due to injury issues that have kept him on the sidelines. However, he is expected to recover in time for India's upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to begin on September 19. Fans and the Indian team alike are eagerly awaiting his return, hoping to see more magic from one of India's premier bowlers.
