Shannon Gabriel announces retirement from international cricket

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished 12-year career. Gabriel, who played 86 matches for the West Indies, shared the news on his Instagram account, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and experiences he gained throughout his journey. At 36, Gabriel reflected on his international career and announced plans to continue playing domestically and in various franchise leagues around the world.

A key component of the West Indies pace attack

Gabriel made his Test debut in 2012 at Lord’s and quickly became an essential part of the West Indies bowling lineup. Out of his 86 international appearances, 59 came in the Test format, where he took 166 wickets at an average of 32.21, including six five-wicket hauls. His most memorable performance came in June 2018 against Sri Lanka, where he achieved match figures of 13 for 121, the fourth-best in West Indies cricket history. Gabriel’s final Test match was played against India in Port of Spain in 2023, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career. "During the past 12 years, I have dedicated myself to playing international cricket for the West Indies," Gabriel wrote. "Playing this beloved game at the highest level has brought me immense joy, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end."

A mixed legacy with unforgettable highs and setbacks

While Gabriel will be remembered for his prowess as a classic West Indian fast bowler, his career was not without controversy. One notable incident came in 2017 when he was dismissed by Yasir Shah while attempting a slog sweep in a Test match against Pakistan, resulting in a heartbreaking defeat with just seven balls needed to secure a draw. Additionally, in 2019, Gabriel received a four-match ODI ban after making a homophobic remark during an exchange with England captain Joe Root during a match in St. Lucia.

In his retirement message, Gabriel expressed his deep appreciation to everyone who supported him throughout his international career. He also outlined plans to continue contributing to cricket, playing domestically for Trinidad and Tobago, as well as for club and franchise teams across the globe.
