In a recent IPL 2024 match against RR, Shubman Gill, the skipper of GT, got really upset during the 17th over. This happened because of a mistake involving the DRS (Decision Review System) by the third umpire. The situation arose when Mohit Sharma was bowling to Sanju Samson. Initially, the on-field umpire called a wide because the ball went outside the tramline. But things got complicated after that.

The GT team decided to challenge the umpire’s decision through a review. At first, the third umpire said the ball wasn’t wide, going against the on-field umpire’s call. However, after a bit more checking, the third umpire changed his mind and said it was actually a wide ball. This back-and-forth made Shubman Gill really angry, and he went over to argue with the umpires.

The disagreement came from a delivery that went outside the wide tramline. But it got tricky because Sanju Samson moved across the stumps just before the ball was bowled. Despite the close call, it was still counted as a wide ball, even though there was a moment of confusion when the third umpire initially said it wasn’t wide before correcting himself.

The DRS controversy

This incident happened when RR was doing well, with Samson and Parag having a good partnership and already scoring 148 runs in 16.6 overs. Earlier, GT won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium for the 24th match of IPL 2024.

Shubman Gill wasn’t happy with the decisions made by umpire Vinod Seshan and expressed his discontent through a lengthy and lively discussion. These calls came at a crucial moment in the game, adding to the pressure on the Gujarat team. The situation worsened when an extra delivery was bowled due to the wide call, and Sanju Samson capitalized by hitting it to the boundary, reaching his fifty off just 31 balls, highlighting his importance as the Royals’ captain.

Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson propelled Rajasthan to a formidable total of 196 runs in 20 overs. Riyan’s stellar performance catapulted him to the second position in the Orange Cap list, joining Virat Kohli as the only batters to surpass 250 runs in the season so far. Meanwhile, Samson remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 38 balls, as the Royals scored a whopping 123 runs in the last 10 overs. Despite Rashid Khan’s efforts, Gujarat struggled to contain the flow of runs, and their lackluster fielding further added to their woes.
