The Australian cricket team is set to play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka as the visiting side, following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. This series comes amidst a string of injury concerns for the Australian Test side. Key players, including Josh Hazlewood, sustained injuries during the BGT series, and later, captain Pat Cummins reported a minor ankle problem.

To ensure Cummins is fully fit for major upcoming events like the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he has been rested for the Sri Lanka series. Additionally, Cummins and his family are expecting their second child, making it a good opportunity for him to take a break. In his absence, Steven Smith was appointed as the stand-in captain for the series.

Steven Smith Suffers Elbow Injury

However, in a recent update, Steven Smith sustained an injury while playing for the Sydney Sixers in a Big Bash League (BBL) match against the Sydney Thunder. The match, which was washed out due to rain, saw Smith face an issue with his right elbow while throwing the ball during fielding. This is the same elbow that required surgery in 2019 due to a serious injury.

Following the incident, Smith was seen wearing a brace on his injured elbow. He is currently preparing to join the Test squad in Dubai later this week for further specialist assessments. Cricket Australia has stated that updates regarding his condition will be shared once more information is available.

Injury Status Uncertain

As of now, there is no clarity on the severity of Smith’s injury. He has not been ruled out of the series, but concerns remain about whether he will be fit in time. Since the series comprises only two matches, the team management is cautious and does not want to rush him back into action, risking further complications.

The first Test is scheduled to begin on January 29 in Galle, followed by the second and final match starting on February 6. With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, starting February 19, Smith’s fitness is critical for Australia’s campaign.

If the injury turns out to be more serious, Smith may have to miss the series entirely. In such a scenario, Travis Head is being considered as a potential captain to lead the side. The Australian team is likely to proceed carefully, prioritizing long-term goals over short-term gains, given the importance of Smith to the squad.

Smith is expected to undergo scans and further evaluations before any final decision is made. More updates are awaited once the medical team provides a detailed report on his condition. The team’s primary focus remains on ensuring the players are fully fit for the big events ahead.

Australia will hope to field a strong side for the Sri Lanka series despite these challenges, as it serves as crucial preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
