Star India batter Suryakumar Yadav's participation in Mumbai's Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament match against Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI in Coimbatore ended only 38 balls after he sustained an injury while fielding. However, his injury puts his participation in the upcoming Duleep Trophy in doubt or not it is still not known. However, Mumbai didn't have a great game either, as they managed only 156 in reply to TNCA XI's 379, after which TNCA XI scored 286 to set Mumbai 510 to win as well.
The tournaments, both the Buchi Babu and the Duleep - which begins on September 5 - are important for Suryakumar Yadav as he looks to return to India's Test team. Suryakumar, however, played only one Test, against Australia in Nagpur in February 2023, where he scored 8 runs in his only innings as India won by an innings and 132 runs as well.
"What is in my power right now is to play the Buchi Babu tournament, go on to play the Duleep Trophy and then see what happens," he told reporters before the game in Coimbatore. "But yes, I'm really looking forward. There are ten Test matches lined up and I'm obviously excited for some red-ball fun."
However, he hasn't played a first-class match since last season's Duleep Trophy final - that was in July over a year ago. Between then and now, he suffered a groin surgery, which kept him out of action for three months as well. Notably, he was part of both the ODI and T20 World Cups as well.
Indian star players to take part in the Duleep Trophy this season
At the Duleep Trophy, where several Indian Test players hopefuls are taking part and hoping to make a mark, Suryakumar Yadav is in Team C as well, which will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and includes Sai Sudharsan and Rajat Patidar, among others as well. Notably, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan are among the others who are also playing in the Duleep Trophy in a bid to return to India's Test team as well.
However, Team India's next few months will be against Bangladesh (two Tests at home in September-October), against New Zealand (three Tests at home in October-November), and against Australia (away from November 2024 to January 2025). After that, they will play a five-Test series in England between June and August as well.
Tabraiz Shamsi attacked Suryakumar Yadav on social media
Meanwhile, Tabraiz Shamsi, who was part of the South Africa team that lost to India in the T20 World Cup 2024, shared a video on social media recently where a rope was used to measure a catch taken during a local match just before the boundary line. Sharing this, he said that if this method was used to check the Suryakumar Yadav catch in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, it would have been given not out as well. Notably, Suryakumar's stunning catch turned the table for India as they clinched the trophy.
However, after posting the video, fans trolled him a lot and a day after, Tabraiz Shamsi posted a clarification saying that the post he made was only a joke as well.
"In case some people dont understand that it's meant to be a joke and no one is crying... let me explain it to you like a 4 year old child. It's A Joke," he said.
