Scotland registered their first win of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, overcoming Namibia in a thrilling encounter. The match saw some brilliant individual performances, a solid team effort, and strategic gameplay.
Namibia won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that seemed promising initially. However, early setbacks quickly turned the game in favor of Scotland.

Namibia faced immediate pressure as they lost three wickets in the powerplay. Malan Kruger’s early departure for just two runs added to the team’s woes. By the end of the powerplay, Namibia’s score stood at a precarious 55/4.
Despite the early losses, Namibia’s skipper Gerhard Erasmus took charge. He played an aggressive yet calculated innings to steer his team towards a respectable total.
Gerhard Erasmus was the standout performer for Namibia, smashing a quickfire half-century off 31 balls. His innings included four boundaries and two sixes, injecting much-needed momentum into the Namibian innings.
Zane Green attempted to build on the foundation laid by Erasmus, contributing 28 runs off 27 balls. However, Namibia continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, preventing them from capitalizing fully on the momentum.
Scotland’s bowlers displayed excellent discipline, maintaining tight lines and lengths. Brad Wheal and Gavin Main were particularly effective, taking crucial wickets at vital stages.
Brad Wheal picked up three wickets, and Gavin Main supported well with two, ensuring Namibia could not accelerate in the death overs. Their combined efforts restricted Namibia to a total of 155/9 in 20 overs.
Scotland began their chase cautiously, aware of the target set by Namibia. They aimed to build a solid foundation without losing early wickets.
In the powerplay, Scotland lost only one wicket—George Munsey—ending the initial six overs at 43/1. This steady start laid the groundwork for the middle order to take charge.
The middle order saw contributions from Michael Jones and Brandon McMullen. However, they couldn’t stay at the crease long enough to take Scotland over the line on their own.
Captain Richie Berrington played a crucial innings, scoring an unbeaten 47 off 35 balls. His composed and strategic batting ensured that Scotland remained on track throughout their chase.
All-rounder Michael Leask played a pivotal role in Scotland’s victory. Not only did he contribute significantly with the bat, but he also took a crucial wicket during Namibia’s innings.
For his outstanding performance, Michael Leask was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match. His contributions were instrumental in Scotland securing a five-wicket victory with nine balls to spare.
Scotland’s first win in the T20 World Cup 2024 came through a combination of disciplined bowling, strategic batting, and excellent leadership. This victory against Namibia has boosted their confidence as they progress in the tournament.
