In a dominating display at the T20 World Cup, West Indies secured a 134-run victory over Uganda, thanks to Akeal Hosein’s breathtaking spell. Hosein’s five wickets for just 11 runs dismantled Uganda’s batting lineup, leading to their joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history.

West Indies Innings

The match at Providence saw West Indies win the toss and opt to bat first on a slow deck. West Indies faced a tough start in the tricky conditions, but Johnson Charles and Andre Russell provided crucial contributions. Charles anchored the innings with a steady 44 off 42 balls, allowing others to play more freely. Russell, known for his power hitting, added a quickfire 30 not out off 17 balls, ensuring West Indies reached a competitive total of 173 for 5.

Akeal Hosein’s Magic Spell

Akeal Hosein’s performance was the highlight of the match. His opening spell was magical as he scythed through Uganda’s top order with a combination of swing and seam. Hosein’s control and variation left Uganda’s batters needing more knowledge. His delivery to dismiss Riazat Ali Shah, which swung late to crash into the stumps, was a standout moment. Hosein’s mastery of both spin and seam made him unplayable, leading to Uganda’s collapse at 23 for 7.

Uganda’s Struggles

Uganda’s batters needed help coping with the disciplined and varied West Indies bowling attack. Despite some resistance from individual players, they could not form any substantial partnerships. Uganda’s innings ended for a mere 39 runs, their joint-lowest total in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Key Moments in the Match

Several key moments defined the match. The early dismissal of Uganda’s top order by Hosein set the tone, while crucial contributions from Johnson Charles and Andre Russell helped West Indies post a challenging total. The steady fall of wickets ensured Uganda never got into the game, with West Indies’ bowlers maintaining pressure throughout. Together they sent Uganda crashing to 39 all out – the joint-lowest total in the T20 World Cup.

West Indies’ comprehensive victory over Uganda showcased their dominance in both batting and bowling. Akeal Hosein’s incredible spell was the defining factor, underlining his importance to the team. Despite their efforts, Uganda was outclassed and will need to regroup and learn from this experience.

Akeal Hosein (4-0-11-5) | Player of the Match

I think I needed this. In the nets and in the previous series, I felt like the ball was coming out of my hand good. I think I was doing everything right in the nets but I just wasn’t getting the rewards. Just have to stay calm and it’ll be my turn soon. (Favourite wicket) I think I’ll go with the regular finger spinner one, that was my favourite. It’s a lot of hard work (to perform at this level), especially when you start getting success.
