The third match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 took place between Namibia and Oman at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados. The Namibia vs Oman game ended in a tie and the first super-over decided the winner – Namibia. Jan Frylinck, David Wiese and Erasmus helped the team win the nail-biting match.

Namibia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Batting first, Oman lost their opener Kashyap Prajapati on a golden duck, courtesy of Ruben Trumpelmann. It was a full-length delivery and that trapped him in front of the middle stump as well. The next ball showed the dismissal of Aqib Ilyas who was hit in the boots by an inswinger as well. And, Namibia had the best possible start.

Ruben Trumpelmann claimed a four-fer

However, Naseem Khushi too got out for a mere 6. But then, Zeeshan Maqsood (22 off 20) and Khalid Kail (34 off 39) started to steady the ship. But that didn’t last long as Bernard Scholtz removed Zeeshan soon after the powerplay. Later, Ayaan Khan scored 15. But the lower middle-order couldn’t do much in front of a strong bowling attack.

Ruben Trumpelmann did exceptionally well with the ball and he claimed a four-fer and finished with 4 for 21. On the other hand, David Wiese also claimed 3 wickets for 28 runs as well. Gerhard Erasmus too picked up 2 scalps and their collective efforts restricted the opponents to a below-par score of 109 in 19.4 overs. Notably, Trumpelmann becomes the FIRST player to take a wicket on the first ball of a World Cup innings twice (ODIs+T20Is) – vs Scotland in 2021 and vs Oman in 2024 as well.

While chasing, Namibia had a poor start as their opener Michael van Lingen got out for a 2-ball duck. However, Nikolaas Davin (24 off 31) and Jan Frylinck (45 off 48) joined hands to steady the ship. They added 42 runs for the second wicket whereas Gerhard Erasmus scored 13 off a6 as well.

David Wiese’s all-round brilliance helped Namibia win the Super Over

However, the game took a turn towards the end of the innings where Mehran Khan struck in the 18th over and removed Smit for 8, conceding only 4 runs. David Wiese hit a six in the penultimate over and the equation came down to 5 needed in the final over.

However, Mehran Khan came to bowl the final over and he started with a wicket. He bowled the in-form Jan Frylinck and the second delivery went for a dot as well. He then trapped Zane Green in front of the stumps as well. However, David Wiese and Malan Kruger took the match to the Super Over.

Meanwhile, David Wiese and Erasmus started the Super Over whereas Bilal Khan bowled the over. Wiese scored 10 runs in the first two balls whereas Erasmus finished with two boundaries and they finished with 21 runs in the over. While chasing, David Wiese dismissed Naseem Khushi for 2 and a tight over saw them manage only 10 runs and Namibia registered a convincing win.

However, this is not the first time that Oman played a Super Over and faced the same fate. In the T20 World Cup qualifiers vs Nepal, they played against Nepal and co-incidentally, they scored 21/0 and the opponents scored 10/1 as well.

After the win, David Wiese, Player of the Match said: “Lost a couple of years tonight, don’t know how many I have left in me now. Just been that kind of an emotionally draining game. (On his Super Over bowling) I had a feel for the wicket and knew what I had to execute in the Super Over.

The pitch was difficult, was a bit two-paced and different to what we expected. I think we adapted well and it was surely a pitch where you had to spend some time out there. I think if we were chasing 180, we would have had to attack without thinking too much about the pitch, so tough to say what would have been a par total on this wicket.”
