The Super Eight match of Group 2 of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is currently occurring between West Indies vs South Africa at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on Jun 23, 08:30 PM local. South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first. Tabraiz Shamsi claimed 3 wickets and helped South Africa restrict the opponent to a below-par total.

Roston Chase shines with the bat

Put into bat first, West Indies got a big blow as in-form Shai Hope got out for a 2-ball duck. Meanwhile, dangerous Nicholas Pooran also got out for a mere 1 off 3 as well. However, Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase steadied the ship in the middle after that. They added 81 runs before the former got out for 35 runs as well and Tabraiz Shamsi broke the partnership.

Soon Rovman Powell also got out for 1 off 2. Sherfane Rutherford failed to contribute as he got out for a 4-ball duck. Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph tried to contribute but, they could score only 15 and 11 respectively as well. Wickets at regular intervals didn’t let West Indies batters settle down in the middle and they could only manage 135 runs in 20 overs.

Shamsi claims 3 wickets

South African bowlers did exceptionally well. Tabraiz Shamsi picked up 3 wickets as well. Markram, Jensen, Rabada and Maharaj also claimed 1 wicket each as well. However, with this,West Indies managed to hit the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Tabraiz Shamsi said after the 1st innings: “Really nice to be out on the park when there’s a full crowd in. Really nice to be able to contribute today. He was fantastic (Markram’s captaincy). That’s the beauty of our bowling attack. There’s no set pattern. The way he marshalled the guys was brilliant. It’s a pretty decent surface to be honest.

There’s a little bit of turn but nothing excessive. The ball is coming onto the bat nicely and I suppose in the second innings hopefully there’s a bit of dew. I haven’t heard anything yet but hopefully we don’t need him (Jansen fit to bat?). Pleased with the total but it’s cricket, so we got to make the runs.”
