T20 World Cup 2024, Canada vs Ireland Video Highlights: Turning Points, Stats and more

Canada secured their first-ever win in T20 World Cup history by defeating Ireland in the match number 13 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 by 12 runs at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Despite being the favorites, Ireland struggled with the bat, leading to their loss in New York. This is also the first victory for the Canada team in this edition of World Cup. Let us look at the highlights from the game; 

Canada set a respectable target 

The Irish bowlers capitalized on the seam-friendly conditions of the early morning start, quickly dismissing both Canadian openers. Mark Adair struck first, removing Navneet Dhaliwal (6) in the third over, followed by Craig Young who sent back Aaron Johnson (14). Despite Johnson hitting a few boundaries, Ireland’s tight bowling restricted Canada to 137/7 in 20 overs. Struggling at 42/3, Canada were rescued by Nicolas Kirton’s 49 off 35 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes. Supported by Shreyas Movva’s 37 runs, Kirton’s efforts helped stabilize the innings, leading to a competitive total despite the early setbacks. 

Ireland succumb to brilliant bowling by Canada 

Ireland’s bowlers performed reasonably well, but their batters fell short. The Paul Stirling-led side lost five wickets within six overs, derailing their match. They must improve significantly to stay competitive. Chasing 138, Ireland managed only 125/7. Key contributions from Canada’s bowlers, Jeremy Gordon (2/16) and Dilon Heyliger (2/18), stifled Ireland’s efforts. Despite George Dockrell’s unbeaten 30 and Mark Adair’s 34, it wasn’t enough. Nicolas Kirton was named Player of the Match for his pivotal innings. 

Canada score a comprehensive win 

This is also the second time when Canada have beaten any full member nation in T20Is and both times it has been Ireland who have found themselves on the receiving end. Canada started slow, but the partnership between Nicolas Kirton and Shreyas Movva turned the tide. They excelled both with bat and ball, securing a significant win against a Test-playing nation. This victory propelled Canada to third place on the points table. Next, they will face Pakistan.
