For violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, West Indies batsman Rashada Williams has been fined 15% of the match fee. The incident occurred on Friday during her team’s match against Ireland in Group 2 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Williams intentionally made contact with Ireland bowler Leah Paul in the sixth over of the West Indies innings after being run out.

It was a horrendous mix up between Hayley Matthews and Williams.Williams was caught off guard while ball-watching when Matthews immediately called for a run at the non-striker’s end. Leah Paul receives the ball after Amy Hunter calmly fields on one bounce and has sufficient time to remove the bails. Williams deliberately pushed Paul away out of frustration.

Williams was found guilty of violating the provisions of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

Level 1 infractions carry a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee and one or two demerit points, with a minimum penalty of an official reprimand. Williams’s disciplinary record has been updated to include one more demerit point. In 24 months, this was the keeper’s first offense.

“Williams admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Shandre Fritz of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. There was no need for a formal hearing.”

ICC said in an official statement.

“On-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Vrinda Rathi, third umpire Lauren Agenbag and fourth umpire N Janani levelled the charge. “Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.”

With a score of 66 not out, Hayley Matthews led West Indies to a six-wicket victory that ended a drought.

The result ended West Indies’ 15-match T20I losing streak and sent Ireland out of the tournament after their third consecutive loss. At the Women’s T20 World Cup, Ireland has never won a game.

Great win for West Indies

On February 19, the Women in Maroon defeated Pakistan in a thrilling match that they won by just three runs. Shamilla Connell defended 18 runs in the final over as West Indies defended 117 runs. With this victory, West Indies remain in contention for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Semi finals.

With 4 points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.601, West Indies are in third place. Pakistan, on the other hand, has been eliminated from the tournament, so West Indies’ upcoming match against England on February 21 is effectively a quarterfinal match. They would lament that they were unable to accelerate during the middle overs phase, which was detrimental to them.
