AB de Villiers, the cricketing legend, has urged India to send Virat Kohli to bat at number three in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite Kohli’s outstanding performance as an opener in the IPL 2024, he has struggled in the multi-nation event.

Virat Kohli’s IPL success and T20 World Cup struggles

Virat Kohli shone brightly in the IPL 2024, winning the Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer. His stint as an opener was marked by consistent and high-scoring innings, showcasing his ability to dominate the opposition bowlers.

However, Kohli’s form has dipped in the T20 World Cup. In three matches, he has managed only 5 runs from 9 balls, averaging 1.66 with a strike rate of 55.55. This stark contrast in performance has raised questions about his batting position.

De Villiers’ perspective on Kohli’s batting position

AB de Villiers, speaking on his YouTube channel, emphasized the importance of batting Kohli at number three. He believes that Kohli’s ability to soak in pressure and adapt his game makes him ideal for this position, especially on better wickets.

“I have always said please bat Virat at number three. Especially in better wickets that they will play now, Virat is the go-to guy at number three. He can play the attacking game and also pull back and absorb the pressure if necessary. He is the best player in the world in the middle overs. I do not see any reasons (for opening),” De Villiers said.

India’s aggressive approach

De Villiers also highlighted the need for India to adopt a more aggressive strategy to break their ICC trophy drought since 2013. He suggested that India should be proactive and seize the momentum early in the game.

“Just make sure you throw the first punch. In the past World Cups, I think they have been a bit conservative, sort of feeling their way into a game. They are such a quality team that I feel they can take a bit of a risk early in the game to get the momentum because there is no looking back once they get the momentum,” De Villiers added.

Kohli’s upcoming challenge against Afghanistan

Virat Kohli will have a chance to turn his fortunes around when India faces Afghanistan on Thursday, June 20, at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. With Rashid Khan leading the Afghan attack, Kohli’s performance will be crucial for India.

India’s T20 World Cup campaign

India has had a strong start in the T20 World Cup, remaining unbeaten with victories against Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States. Their consistent performance has kept them in good stead for the upcoming Super 8 matches.

The team has shown depth and versatility, but Kohli’s form remains a concern. Adjusting his batting position could be the key to unlocking his potential and ensuring India’s continued success in the tournament.
