Afghanistan showcased their prowess in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Uganda in a spectacular match held at Georgetown’s Providence Stadium on June 4. The clash witnessed Afghanistan’s formidable batting line-up setting a massive total, and their experienced bowling attack effectively dismantled Uganda’s batting order.
Afghanistan, after winning the toss, opted to bat first. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran showcased aggressive batting from the onset. Gurbaz, particularly, displayed his prowess by launching a massive six off Uganda’s left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani. The opening pair’s aggressive intent propelled Afghanistan to command 66-0 in the powerplay.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran formed a formidable partnership, accumulating runs rapidly. Their explosive batting led Afghanistan to cross the 100-run mark within the first 10 overs. Gurbaz and Zadran’s remarkable collaboration yielded 154 runs in just 14.3 overs, laying a solid foundation for Afghanistan’s imposing total.
Despite the dismissals of Gurbaz and Zadran, Afghanistan managed to post a formidable total of 183-5. However, their run-scoring momentum slowed towards the end, with only 29 runs coming from the final 33 deliveries.
Afghanistan’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance in pursuit of defending their total. Paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi struck early, dismantling Uganda’s top order with precision. His new-ball partner, spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, added to Uganda’s woes, claiming crucial wickets and restricting their run rate.
Afghanistan’s bowling attack, led by Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan, wreaked havoc on Uganda’s batting line-up. Naveen-ul-Haq’s fiery pace and Rashid Khan’s spin proved too challenging for Uganda’s middle-order batters. The duo’s relentless efforts resulted in Uganda’s batting collapse, ultimately securing a comprehensive victory for Afghanistan.
