T20 World Cup 2024: All you need to know about four groups

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is set to take place in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to 29. This ninth edition promises to be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring 20 teams playing 55 matches across nine cities—six in the West Indies and three in the USA.

West Indies and defending champions England are the most successful nations in the tournament’s history, each having won two titles. However, both teams will miss key all-rounders this year. Jason Holder has been replaced by Obed McCoy due to injury, and Ben Stokes has opted out due to fitness issues. West Indies are placed in Group C, while England is in Group B.

A highlight of the group stage will be the highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash in Group A, scheduled for June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The last encounter between these arch-rivals at the T20 World Cup 2022 saw Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 82 lead India to a thrilling victory.

The teams and their group placements for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 are as follows:

• Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
• Group C: New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
• Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, where they will compete in two groups of four for spots in the semi-finals.

Qualification details

The West Indies and the USA automatically qualified as co-hosts. The eight best-placed teams from the T20 World Cup 2022—England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia, and the Netherlands—gained direct entry. Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified through T20 team rankings.

Additional qualifiers include Ireland and Scotland from the European qualifier, Canada from the Americas qualifier, Papua New Guinea from the East Asia-Pacific qualifier, and Nepal and Oman from the Asia qualifier. Namibia and Uganda advanced from the Africa qualifier.

Notably, Uganda’s 43-year-old off-spinner Frank Nsubuga is set to become the oldest player in T20 World Cup history if he plays in the tournament.

The USA, Canada, and Uganda will make their T20 World Cup debuts. The nine associate teams participating are USA, Canada, Namibia, Scotland, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, the Netherlands, and Nepal.

New Zealand was the first team to announce their 15-member squad on April 29, while Pakistan was the last to reveal their squad on May 24. Below is the complete list of squads for the tournament.
