Bangladesh’s 25-run victory against the Netherlands was a comprehensive display of skill and strategy. This win strengthens their Super 8 chances and highlights their resilience.
Bangladesh, put in to bat, faced early setbacks with the loss of openers Shanto and Litton, both dismissed by Aryan Dutt. However, Tanzid Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan counterattacked, forming a crucial 48-run partnership for the third wicket. Paul van Meekeren then broke this stand, and the Netherlands bowled a few quiet overs to regain control.

Despite the early troubles, Bangladesh managed to post a competitive total of 159. Shakib remained unbeaten till the end, scoring 64 off 46 balls, providing the backbone for his team’s innings. The final five overs yielded 54 runs, pushing the score to a challenging level for the Netherlands.
Aryan Dutt shone with the ball, claiming the important wickets of Shanto and Litton within the powerplay. Paul van Meekeren also contributed significantly, breaking the crucial partnership between Tanzid and Shakib. However, the rest of the Netherlands bowlers struggled with discipline, allowing Bangladesh to post a strong total.
Chasing 160, the Netherlands had a shaky start, losing both openers early. Vikramjit Singh and Sybrand Engelbrecht tried to stabilize the innings with a steady partnership. Engelbrecht, in particular, looked promising, finding boundaries at will. However, his dismissal by Rishad Hossain shifted the momentum back to Bangladesh.
Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Hasan Sakib set the tone with early breakthroughs. Mahmudullah’s crucial breakthrough further dented the Netherlands’ chase. Rishad Hossain’s leg-spin proved decisive, as he claimed three important wickets, including Engelbrecht. Mustafizur Rahman’s economical spell ensured that the Netherlands never recovered from their mid-innings collapse.
With this win, Bangladesh improved their position in the group standings, enhancing their prospects for the Super 8. For the Netherlands, the defeat made their qualification path more challenging, now relying on results from other matches.
The win got Bangladesh to four points in Group D and strengthened it’s bid to make the Super 8 stage.
Netherlands gave a tough fight but fell short in the end. Their qualification hopes gets slimmer, as now they need to beat Sri Lanka and hope that Bangladesh loses to Nepal. This result also means that the Lankans are officially out of this World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan | Player of the Match: It was important for someone from the top four to bat throughout the innings. Happy with the way I contributed with the bat. It wasn’t an easy wicket at the start of the innings. We held our nerves, put on a decent total. I won’t say it was a winning total, it was a challenging total. Bowlers chipped in perfectly, especially Fizz and Rishad. Those two bowlers took the game away from Bangladesh. Hardly any international game has been played in the last 4-5 years, so we didn’t what’s a good score. That’s why we had to keep our wickets in hand and see where we are, maybe 14-15th over and then decide how far we can go. It was a decent total, we put the runs on the board. 160 in a WC game is always tricky and that proved. They had their moments, at the 12th over, they were 80 or 90 for three. Credit should go to all the bowlers.
