As India prepares for their crucial T20 World Cup Super Eight match against Afghanistan in Bridgetown, Barbados, head coach Rahul Dravid has hinted at a possible inclusion of either Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal in the starting lineup. This decision stems from the conditions in Barbados, which appear to favor spin bowlers, contrasting sharply with the pace-friendly pitches in New York.
Bridgetown, Barbados, is known for its spinner-friendly conditions, which could play a significant role in the upcoming match. Unlike the inconsistent bounce offered by the drop-in pitches in New York, Barbados provides a surface that is more conducive to spin, making the inclusion of a wrist spinner a strategic move for India.

Rahul Dravid’s comments to the media on the eve of the match have sparked considerable interest. “It’s tough to leave anyone out. New York had pace bowlers’ conditions… slightly different. We might need something different here (in Barbados). Yuzi (Chahal) or Kuldeep (Yadav) could be used here,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for flexibility in team selection.
“We are lucky to have players with all-round abilities. We had eight batters but we (also) had seven bowling options,” he added.
With the shift to Barbados, India’s strategy must adapt. The spinners are likely to play a pivotal role given the nature of the pitch. The ability of spinners to control the middle overs and provide breakthroughs will be crucial against Afghanistan’s aggressive batting lineup.
Dravid has consistently highlighted the importance of adaptability. “Each situation is unique. Can’t set it in stone. I believe in flexibility,” he stated. This approach allows the team to make strategic adjustments based on the match conditions and opposition strengths.
Flexibility is not limited to the bowling attack. Dravid has also demonstrated a willingness to adapt the batting order based on match situations. For instance, promoting Axar Patel to No. 4 in a critical match against Pakistan was a strategic move to stabilize the innings after early wickets.
In cricket, a “match-up” refers to a situation where a specific bowler or batter dominates a particular player from the opposing team. This tactical decision-making is crucial in T20 cricket, where exploiting favorable match-ups can significantly impact the game’s outcome.
The Pakistan game we moved Axar (Patel), specifically thinking around it… Rishabh (Pant) up the order (at No. 3), lots of thinking goes into it. I don’t think in Tests (cricket), we will have that flexibility. In T20s where it is a lot about match-ups, you see it happening more (flexibility in batting position).”
Dravid expressed his confidence in the team’s preparation for the Super Eights. “Lovely to come to the Caribbean and play cricket. Couple of practice sessions. We are prepared,” he said, underscoring the importance of practice and readiness in adapting to different conditions.
Afghanistan is not a team to be taken lightly. Dravid acknowledged their strengths, stating, “Afghanistan are a very dangerous side. Their players play more in leagues than our players. They are not a team to be taken lightly. Deservingly in Super 8.”
