The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group C match between West Indies and Papua New Guinea at Providence turned into an enthralling affair, culminating in a thrilling victory for the Caribbean side. This was a historic match up for the PNG as it was the first occasion for them at the grandest stage of T20 cricket. Eventually after a hard fought battle, the host West Indies won the game by five wickets and one over to spare. On that note, let us look at top highlights from the game;

PNG make a fighting total

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Papua New Guinea faced an early setback with opener Tony Ura departing for just two runs. Despite this early blow, captain Assad Vala steadied the innings with a composed 21 runs off 22 balls. He received brief support from Lega Siaka and significant contributions from Sese Bau, who scored a fluent half-century with 50 runs off 43 deliveries.

However, the West Indies bowlers, led by Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph, delivered a disciplined performance, taking crucial wickets at regular intervals to keep the scoring in check. Russell and Joseph each claimed two wickets, while Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd, and Gudakesh Motie contributed with one wicket apiece, ensuring Papua New Guinea was restricted to a competitive total of 136/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

West Indies eventually crossed the line

In response, West Indies faced an early blow when opener Johnson Charles was dismissed without scoring. However, Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran steadied the innings with a 53-run partnership before Pooran was out for 27 runs. Roston Chase then anchored the innings with a brilliant unbeaten knock of 42 runs off just 27 balls, guiding West Indies towards the target. Despite losing a few quick wickets towards the end, Andre Russell’s cameo of 15 runs off nine balls ensured West Indies chased down the target of 137 with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare, securing a crucial victory in their T20 World Cup campaign.

Asad Vala spun PNG back in the game

Assad Vala was the standout bowler for Papua New Guinea, claiming two wickets, but it wasn’t enough to prevent West Indies from clinching victory. Despite putting up a strong fight against the USA, Papua New Guinea’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign did not start on a positive note.
