The one that was supposed to largely determine India’s chances in the knockout round didn’t go as planned, and India lost by 5 wickets in Perth to South Africa, their first loss of the tournament. Now that India has lost, how do Pakistan’s chances of making the semis look?
Pakistan had a significant day on Sunday. Their chances of reaching the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final round were said to be determined by three Group 2 matches. Pakistan’s chances are heavily dependent on how other teams in the group perform after losses to India and Zimbabwe. Pakistan supporters were overjoyed for the majority of Sunday. After a drama in the final over, Bangladesh won the thrilling match against Zimbabwe, and the Babar Azam-led team finally won against the Netherlands. However, the one that was supposed to largely determine India’s chances in the knockout round didn’t go their way, and India lost their top spot after losing to South Africa by 5 wickets in Perth, their first loss of the tournament.
India was in charge of Group 2 and was just one victory away from qualifying for the semifinals. However, with their win in Perth, South Africa stunned the Men in Blue to claim the table’s top spot and now stand as clear favourites to win the group. Bangladesh and India are the next two countries on the list, separated only by their net run rates. India has the advantage thanks to the NRR of +0.844, but the match between India and Bangladesh on Wednesday is even more important.
Needless to say, in order for them to finish with a maximum of six points, they must win their final two matches, which are against South Africa on November 3 and Bangladesh on November 6. However, Pakistan will not be able to score six points if the India game does not go their way. Their hopes are now becoming increasingly dependent on additional factors.
If it comes down to a battle between teams with six points, their victory over Proteas will not allow them to take the top spot in the table. Additionally, they will need to win their next two matches by significant margins in order to have a chance in terms of NRR.
