The Indian cricket team is gearing up for the Twenty20 World Cup, with their departure to the US scheduled immediately after the conclusion of the IPL league stage. The Indian team will commence their journey to the US on May 21, following the culmination of the IPL league stage. Players not involved in the IPL playoffs will be travelling with the first batch, accompanied by the coaching and support staff led by Rahul Dravid. The second batch, including players from teams advancing to the playoffs, will depart after the IPL final on May 26.

Matches in New York

Upon arrival in New York, the Indian team will play three league matches, scheduled for June 5, 9, and 12, against Ireland, Pakistan, and hosts USA, respectively. Practice facilities have been arranged at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, approximately 30 km from Manhattan, where the team will undergo training.

ECB’s Directive

In contrast, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has mandated the return of its players participating in the IPL before May 22. This decision stems from England’s upcoming series against Pakistan, which conflicts with the IPL playoffs. Consequently, several English players will be unavailable for their IPL franchises during the crucial knockout stage.

“Selected players, currently playing in the Indian Premier League, will return in time for the series against Pakistan, which gets underway at Headingley on Wednesday 22″, May 2024,” the ECB stated.

Impact on IPL Teams

The ECB’s directive has significant implications for IPL franchises, particularly those with English players integral to their line-ups. Teams like Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Chennai Super Kings are expected to miss key contributors if they qualify for the playoffs.

Criticism and Response

The ECB’s decision has drawn criticism from IPL stakeholders, with concerns about its timing and impact on player availability. Some argue that players could have fulfilled IPL commitments and international duties without compromising their preparation.

A franchise official criticised the ECB’s decision to recall their players before the business end of the IPL. “They will have enough time to play two matches, post the IPL final — whichever player is involved, maximum one or two — and then play against Pakistan in two T20Is, on May 28 and 30, and still leave on June 2 for the World Cup (as per their plan), with players properly prepped at the IPL. As if playing in England in May is going to reflect the Caribbean conditions. It freezes in England in May.”
