The ICC T20 World Cup is set to take place in Australia from 16 October this year. If we talk about the T20 World Cup today, there are top-notch batters who record for scoring the most runs in the tournament on the list. With seven T20 World Cups being played till now, here is a list of the top batters who have made the most runs, since the tournament’s inception.
Mahela Jayawardene, the renowned batsman and captain of Sri Lanka, has scored the most runs in T20 World Cups. He competed in five editions of the competition, appearing in 31 games and scoring 1016 runs, making him the only player to do so. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene scored 1016 runs in 31 T20 World Cup matches between 2007 and 2014, with an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 134.74. Mahela Jayawardene’s tale spans a century and six half-centuries. In addition, the Sri Lankan superstar has also smashed the most fours in the T20 World Cup (111).
Chris Gayle, one of the most destructive and impeccable batters in the cricketing world, retains the second position of the greatest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup. Gayle has scored 965 runs in 33 matches, the Caribbean southpaw has accumulated 965 runs in 33 innings at an average of 34.46 and a strike rate of 142.75 throughout his seven T20 World Cup appearances. He has also struck two centuries.
Tillakaratne Dilshan is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and captain of the Sri Lanka national side. He is widely considered one of the most inventive T20 batters of all time, as the top-rated Sri Lankan player in run chases. The Sri Lankan opener has appeared in 34 World Cup innings in six tournaments. Dilshan amassed 897 runs thanks to six half-centuries.
Dilshan has been a big lifesaver for Sri Lanka cricket, appearing in five T20 World Cups (2007-2014). He was instrumental in leading Sri Lanka to the 2009 T20 World Cup finale. However, they got defeated by Pakistan in the year’s last T20 match.
Current Indian full-time skipper, Rohit Sharma, is all about his wholesome powerful hitting and innings. Nicknamed ‘HITMAN’, the Indian opener has been phenomenal with the bat. As it suggests, several fanatics are loading high expectations on the new captain to win the upcoming T20 World Cup, thanks to his captaincy stint in the ongoing bilateral series. The talismanic batter has made 847 runs in 33 matches, with a strike rate and average of 38.50 and 131.52, respectively.

Virat Kohli, India’s best batsman, has only played four World Cups but has scored 845 runs in 21 matches. So far in the competition, Kohli has hit nine half-centuries. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli is the second Indian to make the top five. Simultaneously, Virat is the only batter with more than 800 runs in the T20 World Cup at an average of more than 76.
Virat Kohli scored the most runs (319) in the 2014 T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli is now regarded as one of the top all-around players in the world. His T20 batting average is 50.1. His magnificent batting enabled India to reach the finals, but India couldn’t match resurgent Sri Lanka’s calibre.
