Former Indian captain Virat Kohli had another disappointing performance with the bat. Although he got a fine start, he failed to capitalise on that in the crucial time of India’s first innings in the Melbourne Test. After his dismissal, while Kohli was walking back to the dressing room, he had a verbal fight with fans. 

In India's first innings of the Melbourne Test, Virat Kohli was dismissed for 36 off 86 balls with the help of four fours as Scott Boland took that wicket at the late moment of the second day.

While Kohli scored a crucial unbeaten century (100*) during the Test series opener at Perth, where India won by 295 runs, his other innings in this tour were 5, 7, 11, and 3 runs before the ongoing Melbourne Test. Although the right-handed batter seemed promising in the Melbourne Test, the visitors lost his wicket at a crucial time.

During his return to the dressing room, Kohli was booed and had a verbal fight with the stadium fans as he went back to the fans to reply. A security personnel handled the situation by calmly guiding him to move from the place. 

Kohli has already been fined 20% of the match fees and handed one demerit point for his day one action in the ongoing Melbourne Test, where he had a shoulder bump with the debutant Australian opener Sam Konstas.

Australia scored 474 runs in the first innings

The five-match Test series between the hosts Australia and the visitors India, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, is currently standing in the 1-1 position while the fourth match of the series is running at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

After the Australian captain Pat Cummins chose to bat first at the MCG, the hosts scored 474 runs. While the top three batters scored 50+ runs, former skipper Steven Smith scored a memorable 140 runs. 

There was no doubt that the senior Indian batters had to play responsibly to make a comeback in the game. While the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma chose to return to his usual opening batting position, the right-handed batter was caught out in the second over of the innings after scoring three of five balls.

KL Rahul once again struggled to capitalise on his start as he was out for 24 runs, while the visitors were struggling at 51/2. While the opener Yashasvi Jaiswal found a solid start, Kohli joined him with a big hope.

Jaiswal and Kohli set a century partnership

Jaiswal and Kohli set up a solid partnership for the third wicket as it looked like the second day of the Melbourne Test would end in India’s comfortable position. However, the late wickets destroyed India’s day.  

After the 102-run third-wicket partnership, Jaiswal faced an unfortunate run out after scoring 82 off 118 balls with the help of 11 fours and one six. 

Seven balls after Jaiswal’s dismissal, the set batter Kohli was caught behind off Scott Boland’s delivery after scoring 36 runs. Suddenly, the visitors lost the plot as they went down to 154/4, and India stumped the second day at 164/5 with the dismissal of nightwatchman Akash Deep (0).
