Headache for Indian Team is increasing day by day with now the bad injury of Washington Sundar’s finger

On day 1 of the match between the Indian side and County Select XI, the top order of India did not have a good time. Both Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal departed early on even after looking in a decent form with the willow. However, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja then held the fort for India and added important runs for the team. Rahul hit a belligerent century whereas Jadeja put up an impressive show of 75 runs, owing to which the Indian team put up a total of 311 runs on board.

The Indian team in England was dealt another injury blow on Thursday when spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out of the five-Test series beginning August 4. Washington Sundar is the third player after Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan to be ruled out of the tour. It has been learned that Washington Sundar has fractured a finger after being hit by a Mohammed Siraj delivery on the second day of the first-class warm-up game.

What BCCI officials have to say about Washington Sundar

“Yes Washy-(Washington Sundar) has a fractured finger just like Avesh who had a thumb dislocation. Both are out of Test series and will go home,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“He will also take at least five weeks to start bowling and so no point keeping them here,” the source said.

It is understood that the short ball from Siraj that accounted for Washington Sundar hit his fingers harder than expected and he was in excruciating pain after returning to the pavilion.

While Washington or Avesh were not first-team regulars but are integral parts of the net bowlers and the Tamil Nadu all-rounder with his superior batting abilities would have been in the mix during some point of the series.

“It is sheer irony that both Avesh and Washington Sundar played for opposition and got hurt. But this is sport and injuries are part and parcel of life,” the source added.

On the second day, what hogged everybody’s attention was the dismissal of Washington Sundar off Mohammed Siraj’s delivery. Throughout his spell, Siraj looked impressive with the ball as he scalped his first wicket of the England tour.

Sundar edged the outstanding delivery from Siraj and Rohit Sharma caught him at the second slip. This wicket would have boosted his confidence going ahead in the match. The speedster is on the list to make it to the playing XI of India for the first Test match and a good outing in the practice game can quite help him to arm his talent better amidst the English condition. The Durham cricket posted the video of Sundar’s dismissal on their Twitter handle.

Jasprit Bumrah, who went wicketless in the WTC final, also picked up his first wicket of this tour. After the disappointing display in the final against the Kiwis, the pacing spearhead of India seemed to have found his rhythm back on Day 2 of the warm-up game. It is pivotal for India that Bumrah gets his touch back ahead of the start of India’s second cycle of the WTC.

The replacements will soon be named and it will be interesting if a Navdeep Saini or Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaces Avesh and join after Sri Lanka series gets over.

In the case of Washington, the like-for-like replacement is Krishnappa Gowtham.
