In a gripping Group A match of the T20 World Cup 2024, India triumphed over arch-rivals Pakistan by a narrow margin of 6 runs. The thrilling encounter showcased stellar bowling performances from both teams, ultimately leaving Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah in tears after a valiant yet unsuccessful chase.

Batting first, India managed to post a modest total of 119 runs, getting bowled out in just 19 overs. The Indian batting lineup struggled against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. However, the score turned out to be competitive, thanks to the exceptional efforts of Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

Pakistan’s chase began cautiously, with Mohammad Rizwan anchoring the innings. Rizwan scored 31 off 44 balls, but found little support from the other end. Imad Wasim, who contributed 15 runs, struggled to keep the momentum, leading to Pakistan’s downfall as the Indian bowlers applied relentless pressure.

Entering the final over, Pakistan required 18 runs to win. Naseem Shah walked out to bat and displayed remarkable resolve, scoring 10 runs off 4 balls. Despite his late heroics, Pakistan fell short, finishing at 113/7 in their 20 overs.

Emotions overflow as Naseem Shah breaks down

The conclusion of the match saw a heartbroken Naseem Shah walking off the field in tears, his valiant effort unable to carry Pakistan over the line. Teammate Shaheen Afridi was seen consoling him, while a touching moment captured India’s captain Rohit Sharma also offering solace to the distraught young pacer.

Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling attack with outstanding figures of 3/14 in four overs, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 3.50. His pivotal wicket of Mohammad Rizwan in the 15th over turned the tide in India’s favor. Hardik Pandya provided crucial support with two wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel chipped in with one wicket each.

“Can’t expect much from tailenders…”

At the 14-over mark, Pakistan seemed poised to chase down the target, needing 40 runs from the final six overs with Rizwan well-set. However, disciplined bowling and strategic field placements by India ensured regular fall of wickets, thwarting Pakistan’s efforts.

With 17 runs required off the last over, Arshdeep Singh’s composed bowling restricted the Pakistani batters, conceding only 11 runs. Despite Naseem Shah’s determined effort, the match slipped away, marking a significant victory for India in this high-stakes clash.

“We bowled well. In the batting, lost back to back wickets and had too much dot balls. Tactics was simple to play normally. Just strike rotation and the odd boundary. But in that period we had too many dot balls. Can’t expect much from tailenders. Our mind was to utilise first six overs in batting. But one wicket down, and again we weren’t up to the mark in first six. Pitch looked decent. Ball was coming on nicely. It was a little bit slow, and some balls extra bounce. Have to win last two matches. Will sit and discuss our mistakes but looking forward to last two matches,” Babar said after the match.
