Perth Scorchers Women and Sydney Sixers Women were involved in the historic Women’s Big Bash League 2024-25 match, which experienced a special Super Over result for the first time in the tournament’s history.
It was a must-win game for both teams to stay in a stronger position in the qualification for the knockout stages. After Perth Scorchers Women captain Sophie Devine won the toss, she chose to bat first. While the Scorchers scored 126 all out, the Sixers scored 126/7 in 20 overs.

Mooney and Halliday shined before the batting collapse
While the opener Maddy Drake (5) was dismissed in the second over of the innings, another opener Beth Mooney and the no.3 batter Brooke Halliday scored 40s to set up a crucial 85-run partnership for the second wicket.
However, since that second wicket partnership was broken, Scorchers Women lost their last nine wickets only for 31 runs. While Mooney scored 44 off 37 balls with four fours, Halliday scored 41 off 32 balls with four fours and one six. Except for them, only the skipper Devine (11) reached double-digit scores in that innings.
Among the Sixers’ bowlers, Ashleigh Gardner picked up four wickets as she ended with the bowling figures of 4-0-21-4. Also, Amelia Kerr (2/33) and Courtney Grace Sippel (2/12) had two wickets each. In the meantime, Caoimhe Bray (1/26) took one wicket.
Beth Mooney created history
During that innings, Beth Mooney created history by becoming the first batter in WBBL history to reach the 5000 runs milestone. The 30-year-old left-handed batter has scored 5001 runs in 141 WBBL matches.
Ellyse Perry fought bravely; Carmichael had crucial cameo
In reply, Sixers’ captain Ellyse Perry batted strongly. Scoring 34th 50+ runs in her WBBL career, skipper Perry scored 67 off 53 balls with the help of eight fours before she was out in the 18th over, where the Sixers still required 20 runs in 16 balls and six wickets in hand. Ashleigh Gardner (17) and Hollie Armitage (14) provided crucial support to Perry while Mathilda Carmichael’s late cameo saved the Sixers from choking in the chase.
In the final over, the Sixers required 12 runs to win. Carmichael took doubles on all the first five balls of the final over, but she was ultimately run out on the final ball while completing her second run. She scored 13 runs off eight balls.
Alana King was the best bowler for Scorchers (3/21), while three other bowlers took one wicket each.
Special Super Over
In the Super Over, Sixers Women scored 15/0. While captain Perry scored 12 not out off five balls, including one six and one four, Gardner scored two not out off two balls.
Meanwhile, despite Beth Mooney being caught and bowled by Gardner for a golden duck and Scorchers scoring only three runs in the first three balls, Mikayla Hinkley finished that Super Over dramatically in a tie after hitting fours in the last three deliveries. Her 14 not out off four saved Scorchers from losing one point as both teams shared one point each after the Super Over tied result.
