India’s squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2021 gave many surprises and created a lot of buzz among fans. From MS Dhoni’s comeback as a mentor in the Team India dressing room as well as Ravichandran Ashwin’s return in the squad, who played his last T20 World cup in July 2017, the list goes on. While celebrations are ongoing for the return of the former as well as current stars the debate has already started around the absence of some popular regulars namely, Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal from the 15-member squad. Cricket experts and fans are shocked at Chahal’s omission from India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 beginning from October 17.
Rahul Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal stand neck to neck when it comes to wickets, averages along with economy rates in the middle overs ever since IPL 2020. Chahal losing his form recently is possibly hard to digest among his fans. Since the start of 2020, he’s played 13 games and taken 11 wickets with an economy rate of 8.92. During that time, Chahar has played just four T20s with an average of (18.33) and economy (7.33) making a good impression. “You need a spinner who can deliver with slightly more speed and efficiency,”. “Recently we have seen Rahul Chahar’s bowling and after a discussion with selectors we eventually went with Chahar”. Sharma stated. Aakash Chopra, The former India opener also raised a question as to why Chahal is not included in the squad among the top 5 spinners? He further stated that Chahal has been one of the finest T20 spinners India has ever seen for the last few years and believes that he’s the second best T20 spinner in the world after Afghanistan player Rashid Khan. The T20 World Cup 2021 will be held in UAE and Oman starting from October 17 to November 14.
Whether It’s Chahal or Chahar at the end, performance matters. No doubt Chahal is one of the best off-spinners India has got, but his absence in the T20 squad has put fans in a not-so-good mood. Let us hope for good news that isn’t further disappointing for the fans.
